Remembering Susan Blackburn

9 /75

Platelets are tiny cells in your blood that form clots and stop bleeding. For millions of Americans, they are essential to surviving and fighting cancer, chronic diseases, and traumatic injuries. Every 15 seconds someone needs platelets. Platelets must be used within five days and new donors are needed every day. That’s why you are needed.

In addition to platelets, one blood donation can help save up to three lives. That means a lot to patients in need, but it took on a new meaning recently.

When Mom was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in October, she began the months long process of  receiving countless platelet and blood infusions.

Without volunteer blood and platelet donors, our story would have been very different. Because of donors, we were able to celebrate birthdays and holidays. Because of blood and platelets donors, mom was strong enough to attend her granddaughter’s high school graduation. Because of blood and platelet donors, mom was able to live a longer and fuller life.

Help me reach my goal of 75 units of blood and platelets for mom’s 75th birthday on October 1st.  Together, we can ensure that patients receive the life saving blood and platelets they need. Make and keep an appointment to give blood to the American Red Cross.
