In April 2025, local community member, Regina, thought she had contracted COVID-19 and made an appointment with her doctor. However, when the hematological lab results came back, she was quickly admitted to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Soon after, Regina found herself faced with an unexpected and serious diagnosis: aplastic anemia.

Aplastic anemia is a rare (2 in a million, rare) and severe disorder that impacts people of all ages, races, and genders. Aplastic anemia is characterized by the bone marrow’s failure to make enough red blood cells, white blood cells, and/or platelets. This results in a range of symptoms and complications, making timely treatment and diagnosis essential.

At this pivotal moment in her life, Regina acknowledges the critical role that blood donors play in her journey. “I have been kept alive with generously donated blood products while we await the treatments to re-awaken my bone marrow function,” Regina shared. “I am very humbled by the generosity of those who donate. The American Red Cross is very short on platelet donations, as the donation process takes a couple of hours to complete. Please consider giving blood at your local American Red Cross. Platelets are needed in many situations, not just mine.”

To help show support for Regina, Derby Family Dentistry is asking the community to schedule an appointment to donate. You never know who you will impact when you have your “SleevesUp”.
