The American Red Cross is facing a national blood crisis – its worst blood shortage in over a decade, posing a concerning risk to patient care.

Blood is essential to help patients survive surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries, but only about 3% of age-eligible people donate blood yearly. In recent weeks, the Red Cross — which provides nearly 40% of the nation’s blood — said it had less than a one-day supply of critical blood types and has had to limit blood product distributions to hospitals. Palm Harbor University High School’s chapter of the medical club HOSA – Future Health Professionals wants to encourage blood donation in individuals who meet the requirements to donate. January is National Blood Donor Month and blood donations are more critical now than ever before, so please pledge to donate blood via PHUHS HOSA’s virtual blood drive!
