Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects millions of people throughout the world. It is estimated that:
SCD affects approximately 100,000 Americans.
SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births.
SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 16,300 Hispanic-American births.

Did you know…
That sickle cell patients benefit most from blood transfusions from people of the same race or similar ethnicity, but only five percent of blood donors are of African ancestry?

Founded in 1923, the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. is a sorority of educators dedicated to taking on the challenge and responsibility of molding and shaping the lives of youth in communities throughout the world.
