Today I Donated blood celebrating my Son Thomas’s Birthday, and to all who are having December Birthdays. I had the pleasure of meeting Hugo (his nickname is “Red-Lobster”- no punt intended…or maybe it is!) from the Red Cross, who took great care of me. Hugo told me that there’s a shortage of donors, but also shortage of workers to draw the blood. I thanked him for showing up to work so that I could offer my blood donation.
I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people on my visits to the Red Cross donating blood. In May I also donate blood in honor of “Mother’s Day” and I met a wonderful phlebotomist named Lorraine who took such great care with me. Lorraine told me the reason she does what she does, is because of an amazing teacher she had at the age of 6, who helped her when she didn’t speak English. Lorraine learned so much compassion from that teacher and knew from an early age she wanted to take care of others. A few years later, Lorraine went back to see that teacher to let her know how grateful she was for the kindness and patients she had shown Lorraine while teaching her. Lorraine has been with the Red Cross for over 11 years and as she humbly told me how proud she is of her 30-year-old son who is studying to become a nurse. Thank you, Lorraine, for all you do making our visits to the Red Cross so easy.

* 1 DONATION saves 3 lives
When you give blood you give another birthday, another anniversary, another day at the beach, another night under the stars, another talk with a friend, another laugh, another hug, another chance.
Happy Birthday to my son Adam, you make me proud to be your mother everyday.
