And yet, less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to donate blood or platelets. When the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a screeching halt for several months, blood donations dropped significantly. While there was an increase as the world reopened, the blood supply remains precarious. As we head toward the holiday season, donations generally decrease.
