The Need for Blood and Plasma:
Someone in the US needs a blood transfusion every two seconds, but fewer than 3% of age-eligible people donate blood each year. There is a vital need for continuous blood donations, and when you donate, plasma is also collected.
-Whole Blood Donation
During a whole blood donation, one pint of blood is collected. When it is processed in the lab, the blood is separated into 3 components — red blood cells, plasma and platelets. This one pint of blood can save up to three lives. After registration and a mini health check, a whole blood donation takes about 5-10 minutes. Allow more time for the entire process.
-Plasma Donation
A plasma donation is collected through a process called apheresis where plasma is collected, and the remaining components (platelets and red blood cells) are safely returned to the donor. It takes about 45 minutes to donate plasma. Allow 60-75 minutes to complete the entire process.
Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a therapy treatment for patients with PANS/PANDAS. It is prepared from a pool of immunoglobulins (antibodies) from the plasma of thousands of healthy donors. Immunoglobulins are made by the immune system of healthy people for the purpose of fighting infections.
Please help California Coalition for PANS/PANDAS Advocacy & the American Red Cross by donating blood or plasma this giving season, now through December 31, 2023.
