At 27 days old my son, Cove, was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called biliary atresia. Biliary atresia is the number one cause of pediatric liver transplant and without intervention his disease is fatal. Luckily Cove received his Kasai procedure which has extended the life of his native liver, but eventually he will need his transplant.
In his 3 months of life Cove has spent nearly 7 weeks in the hospital. During that time he received a blood transfusion and while he didn’t need blood products during his surgery, most babies do. We don’t know what his future holds, but what I do know is we want to help make sure the families who need blood products have them available.
For my birthday this year, in honor of Cove, I’m starting this campaign and asking our friends and family to consider donating blood to help families like ours.
