On March 27th and April 16th, we would have been celebrating an array of Real Heroes in the Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier. These events are to celebrate the ordinary people who contribute their time and energies to assist those in need. These individuals have shown courage, dedication and unselfish character by their acts of heroism in our communities, and we plan to honor them. However, as you know, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier Real Hero Breakfasts have been postponed until it is safe to do so, but for now we need YOU to step and be a Hero.
The American Red Cross now faces a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations during this coronavirus outbreak. Through March 19, more than 5,000 Red Cross blood drives have been canceled across the country due to coronavirus concerns, resulting in some 170,000 fewer blood donations. Healthy individuals are needed to schedule an appointment now to give in the days ahead to help patients counting on lifesaving blood throughout this pandemic.
We understand why people may be hesitant to come out for a blood drive, but want to reassure the public that we have implemented additional precautions to ensure the safety of our donors and staff in response to concern, including:
• Checking the temperature of staff and donors before entering a drive to make sure they are healthy
• Providing hand sanitizer for use before the drive, as well as throughout the donation process
• Spacing beds, where possible, to follow social distancing practices between blood donors, and
• Increasing enhanced disinfecting of surfaces and equipment.
Please make a pledge today to support the critical need for blood at this time by clicking, “Pledge to Give Blood”.
Thank you for taking the time to be a Real Hero during this critical shortage.
